chichiChichi was introduced as the daughter of the Ox King in the "Dragon Ball" section of the manga (anime episode 7, "The Ox-King on Fire Mountain"), where she was encountered by Yamucha fleeing from a dinosaur. Chichi became Goku's wife at the end of Dragon Ball and for the duration of the series, though she became infatuated with him initially as a child during the early part of Dragon Ball, and even fought against him in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament years later to get his attention. Goku unwittingly agreed to marry ChiChi as a child, as he mistook marriage for food because of his naivety. ChiChi and Goku had two children: Gohan and Goten.

ChiChi's predominant personality was defined in the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. She was portrayed as a strong willed woman and very much a stereotypical mother figure, particularly when it came to her oldest son's studies. However, she was also a very proud and understanding person, especially when it came to Goku not being around for long stretches of time.

chichiThroughout the series, ChiChi's character was changed ever so slightly, becoming more relaxed to the idea of her son's fighting, even allowing Gohan to put his studies on hold so that he could train and fight in the Cell Games and in the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament years later. She was even the first person to train her youngest son, Goten, in martial arts.

ChiChi was killed during the Buu arch when Majin Buu turned her into an egg, and then crushed the egg using his foot. This happened after ChiChi confronted him as he was waiting to face Gotenks in the time chamber. This made ChiChi the first victim of the group who had taken refuge on Kami's lookout. The others followed later, after Buu escaped from the time chamber and turned them into his own personal chocolate snacks. ChiChi, along with everyone else killed by Buu, was revived using the Namekian Dragon Balls. She went on to live a peaceful existence for the remainder of Dragon Ball, with her husband and sons. However, at the end of Dragon Ball Z, Goku left the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament mid-match to train Uub, much to her displeasure.

ChiChi appeared in the anime-only series Dragon Ball GT. She was largely a background character, who usually stuck close to both Bulma and Videl during battles. She had the misfortune of having her husband turned into a child by the Black Star Dragon Balls at the very beginning of the series. This lasted until Goku left with Earth's dragon, Shenron (Shen Long).
